Patient Care Technician

Sterling Medical Center in Sterling, Kansas is seeking a full-time Patient Care Technician. Candidate is required to pass a background check, a pre-employment physical, and a drug screen. HIPAA compliance is mandatory for all employees of the healthcare system.

Job Summary:

Under the supervision of the Laboratory and Sterling Medical Center’s Clinic Manager, this position performs clinical laboratory procedures, quality assurance, instrument maintenance as needed, prepares patients for provider, provides medical records, supplies, and equipment.

This position reports to the Laboratory Manager and Clinic Director. The Patient Care Technician also maintains cooperative working relationships with intradepartmental and interdepartmental personnel.

Essential Functions:

1. Performs daily/weekly duties and nursing duties as assigned by RN and provider.

    • Stocks, cleans, and maintains Phlebotomy and patient care area.
    • Inventory of Phlebotomy Supplies, assists in ordering and maintaining clinical and office supplies and equipment.
    • Answer phone calls, takes phone messages and delivers to providers
    • Collects, performs, and results urinalysis testing and manual kit testing as needed.
    • Participates in PT testing
    • Performs DOT and NON-DOT collections with proper certification
    • Prepares patients for examination and treatment. Takes patient history and vital signs and records. Identifies patient needs and reports to provider.

2. Performs preventive maintenance and troubleshooting.

    • Observes and follows department preventive maintenance schedules
    • Provides in-service training to other laboratory personnel and students
    • Provides instruction in phlebotomy procedures, instrument/clinical troubleshooting techniques, and clinical application of test results
    • Assures assimilation of procedures and evaluates troubleshooting techniques. Documents same by initialing department checklist
    • Assists the Laboratory Manager in establishing educational programs that will meet the needs of employees or students.
    • Performs clerical functions associated. Compiles and condenses technical and statistical data for reports and records
    • Maintains records of work performed for workload and statistical reporting purposes. May be assigned responsibility for monthly collection of data
    • Helps maintain files pertinent to the laboratory
    • Prepares exam and treatment room with necessary instruments and supplies
    • Assists provider in applying casts, splints, and dressings in minor surgery and physical exams
    • Gives injections, IM and SubQ
    • Cleans and sterilizes equipment and supplies for treatments and procedures
    • Assists with scheduling of tests and treatments
    • Maintains patients’ information and practices strict confidentiality
    • Assists in checking the defibrillator weekly and the crash cart monthly, or after each use
    • Applies safety principles and proper body mechanics when assisting patients with transfers or positioning.
    • Provides services in a caring, compassionate manner without regard to race, religion, age, disabilities, or financial status

3. Contributes to the general laboratory functions and institutional needs

    • Performs specimen collection and processing duties as needed or assigned and according to policies established in the phlebotomy area.
    • Attends regular department staff meetings and in-service training
    • Attends and participates in the preparation and/or presentation of the laboratory continuing education programs
    • Observes laboratory and clinic policies, procedures, and safety practices
    • Keeps work area neat and clean, and restocks daily supplies
    • Assumes the role of Manager in the routine daily activities of the laboratory as assigned.
    • Maintains equilibrium in stressful situations

Additional Responsibilities:

    • Performs other related duties as assigned
    • May be assigned responsibilities for coordinating educational activities
    • Assists the Laboratory Manager in inventory control and requisition of supplies
    • Assists the Laboratory Manager in quality-assurance activities
    • Maintains the Glucometer Logs/Supplies
    • Maintains the Hemoglobin Meter/Supplies
    • Reviews Drug Screen Accounts


    • Successful completion of a Phlebotomy program that is accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA), or equivalent training, education, and experience
    • Current Certification as a Nursing Assistant
    • Preferred ASCP certification or equivalent nationally recognized Phlebotomy certification. Or High School diploma and enrolled in a Phlebotomy Course
    • Must be able to do phlebotomy for an extended period of time
    • Must be able to lift 50 pounds unassisted
    • Must be able to discern colors and hues
    • Able to take direction over the phone and perform maintenance
    • Adequate computer and verbal communication skills
